Plus-size High-fashion Designer Finds Retailers Still Hesitant - Cbs News

"Culturally they've been made to feel like they shouldn't splurge on themselves because all they need to do is lose that 20 pounds and then 'Aren't you going to wish that you'd waited until you bought that?'" New York Times style editor Katherine Rosman said. But at photo shoots for Plus Model Magazine, the opposite is true. There, the model celebrates her size without holding back. Editor Madeline Jones said the online publication is popular because it addresses what everyone else is ignoring. "Everyone is kind of shying away from the term 'plus-size.' Plus-size models do not want to be called plus-size. Plus-size brands do not want to be called plus-size. In the meantime, you want our plus-size dollars, but you don't want to be called plus-size.
Source: http://www.cbsnews.com/news/plus-size-high-fashion-designer-finds-retailers-still-hesitant/

Solange Had No Words for ?Fashion Police,? but Her Flip of the Hair Spoke Volumes - Yahoo News

The E! talk show isn't the only media outlet guilty of ridiculing the singer for her natural hair , she said.In Touch Weekly"compared it to a dog," she tweeted. In a column last year about pets that resemble celebrities, the gossip magazine reportedly ran a photo of a reader's Yorkshire terrierpoodle mix side by side with a photo of Knowles. "Basically twinsies" was the snarky caption. "What can I say?" tweeted Knowles. Turns out, GIFs speak louder than words. She shrugged off the natural hair haters with one dramatic shake of her voluminous, wavy tresses, captured in a GIF that's been retweeted nearly 20,000 times. Knowles' digital flip of the hair (subbing, perhaps, for her middle finger) came in response to Fashion Police remarks that Zendaya's hair on the Oscar red carpet Sunday night must have smelled like "patchouli oil" or "weed." Zendaya later posted to Instagram that she thought the comments were "not only a large stereotype but outrageously offensive." Zendaya accepted Rancic's apology in a tweet Wednesday morning, writing: "Body shaming and other hurtful tactics will never get the job done." She ended with a quote from Martin Luther King Jr.: "Darkness cannot drive out darkness, only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that."
Source: http://news.yahoo.com/solange-had-no-words-fashion-police-her-flip-205626530.html

Fashion Secrets from Celebrity Stylists: Tara Swennen - StyleBistro Q&A - StyleBistro

On acid." In that case, Bowker, who masterminds The Unseen's formulas and materials, could be considered the chief magician. Before launching The Unseen in February, she worked as a textiles consultant in a number of fields, from fashion to aviation. In 2013, tired of altering her ideas to meet corporate ends, she decided to venture out on her own with the help of a 25,000 ($38,000) grant from Innovate UK (then known as the Technology Strategy Board), and her best friends Smith and Leask, who are responsible for designing and executing the sculptural pieces. (The trio often describe themselves as "the three witches with one eye" because of their shared creative vision, and each has a flesh-tone tattoo of an eye on their inner finger to drive the point home.) Designing with a higher goal Bowker, who has studied both fashion and chemistry, first started developing responsive color-change compounds while earning her Masters in textiles at the Royal College of Art, inspired by the debilitating spinal condition that has her in and out of hospital. "I really want to create a product range for myself that means that I can monitor my spine and condition," she says. "I don't listen to myself when I'm getting ill, and it gets to the point where I'm on crutches before I'll listen to the fact that I have to look after myself." Early in her career she worked with the UK's National Health Service to develop a series of responsive bandages, but when it became clear that it would take at least 20 years to produce a working sample under their funding model, the project was shelved.
Source: http://edition.cnn.com/2015/02/10/world/when-chemistry-meets-couture/index.html?eref=edition

Inditex bans angora wool products - Feb. 10, 2015

One of the world's biggest fashion firms has banned the sale of angora wool after activists highlighted the cruel treatment of rabbits by farms in China. Inditex, which owns Zara, Massimo Dutti and Bershka, said it would stop selling angora garments in all of its 6,400 shops after facing months of pressure from animal rights campaigners. One campaign against angora wool showed videos of live rabbits screaming while fur is pulled from their skins on Chinese farms. The footage, obtained by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) at 10 farms in China, also showed rabbits being stretched on boards and cut as their fur is hacked off.
Source: http://money.cnn.com/2015/02/10/news/companies/angora-rabbit-wool-ban-inditex/index.html?section=money_topstories

Haute Couture Fashion Week: Christian Dior - Yahoo News

A crowd of celebrities came out to view Raf Simons' latest collection, which has a distinctly retro feel. On a giant platform outside the Parisian museum today, models showcased the 1960s-inspired looks of the Christian Dior Spring-Summer 2015 haute couture collection. The designer chose to play with contrasting volumes, namely in long, loose and transparent trench coats worn over embroidered mini-dresses. Flared skirts also made a strong showing, echoing the French fashion house's signature design codes. Colorful stripe motifs are a recurring theme in the collection, along with other groovy geometric prints seen in jumpsuits, bodysuits and dresses.
Source: http://news.yahoo.com/haute-couture-fashion-week-christian-dior-172844196.html

Haute couture fashion week: Schiaparelli - Yahoo News

SAINT LAURENT'S BACK TO BLACK WITH A FRENCH TWIST If the mantra "thin is in" applied to previous Saint Laurent shows, this new collection might be called "thinner is inner." Extra-uber-skinny retro pants stood out in a collection that featured starved-looking women as well as men. Slimane carried on his '70s musing in suits with peaked lapels, winklepicker shoes, glam-rock fur "fun" coats and punk rock leopard-print sweaters with skinny black jeans that might have been worn by Sex Pistols star John Lydon. Nothing in this collection seemed particularly different from previous seasons. That is, apart from the occasional beret. But Slimane clearly has an "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" mentality. And who can blame him? LANVIN HAS A NOSE FOR FASHION TRENDS At his Lanvin show, in the arty Left Bank's Ecole des Beaux Arts, Alber Elbaz crowned one of the newest catwalk trends: Prince of Wales check.
Source: http://news.yahoo.com/salma-hayek-leads-saint-laurent-143154567.html

The waists are typically worn high, sometimes even just above the chest. The fashion house's signature design codes are well represented, as seen in the wide and prominent shoulders in a number of looks. The prints are abstract, with loads of flashy colors (green, red, orange), a few darker shades (midnight blue, brown, pastel blue, black, white) and shimmery accents. One of the most remarkable pieces was a blue pantsuit decorated with mirrors. But the real showstopper was Schiaparelli's eccentric wedding gown: a trench-style mini-dress in glittery gold fabric, complete with a long train in the same material.
Source: http://news.yahoo.com/haute-couture-fashion-week-schiaparelli-153015468.html
